Good news!!! Sam Subramanian has been working with Montgomery Regional Hospital (MRH) and some of their surgeons to get job shadowing opportunities for us. He has met/talked to three surgeons, and they all have agreed to take students. The only thing that needs to be taken care of is paperwork requirements for MRH.

Application for shadowing.

Once you click on this, you will see “Click here to download Student Application Packet.” Download the form and fill it out. Leave section 2 of the application blank. Once the application is done, you can give Sam the application and he will turn in all the applications. After the applications get through, Sam will give out the schedule for the surgeons. If you go to the web page above and scroll down, there is a “MRH Student learning packet” section. You can read it briefly to get instructions about dress code, behavior and so on. These are the surgeons:

Dr. Harry Simmons D.O., General Surgery. He is VCOM’s surgery department chair. He is willing to take up to 3-4 students at a time in the O.R.

Dr. Jolene Henshaw M.D., General Surgery. She is willing to take students at both her office and the O.R. I will confirm the maximum number of students she takes.

Dr. David Stoeckle M.D., General, Breast, Thoracic and Laproscopic Surgery. He is a very busy surgeon. He is willing to take in up to 2 students at a time only in the O.R.

Do not call the offices of the surgeons listed above, as they are busy and do not like to be interrupted. As soon as the paperwork goes through you will get an email with their schedules.

In addition to the above, Sam is working with Carilion New River Valley to get some shadowing opportunities in Neurosurgery. He is still working on scheduling and paperwork.
